My Night at the Phoenix Art Museum

I must say I was a bit worried about taking my husband to the opening reception of Medievalism and it's influence on fashion was a bit scary. I didn't know how much of the lecture he could have taken, but I figure I would enjoy it regardless of what he thought. That and although I enjoy watching baseball live, I've sat through plenty of baseball games because of my husbands love of it. So, it was my turn : ).

Surprisingly, he told me that he appreciates the passion that people have for certain things and that it's actually refreshing. I love fashion so much and it was nice to see that my wonderful husband would support me in even the events I attend. I absolutely enjoyed my night and I'm still enjoying it as we speak.

We are revisiting some old albums we haven't listened to in years and talking like we always do. This night could not have gone better. And it was so nice too, because I usually rule him out when I go to the museums / fashion lectures and end up going by myself.

As far as the fashion and the history, Dennita Sewell the curator for the Phoenix Art Museum's fashion department always does a great job in explaining the mood of the times. I guess you can say the "zeitgeist" of the era. Absolutely amazing public speaker and would recommend to any aspiring fashion designer to attend more functions connected to their local art museum. Anything that you can learn about what people wore in different periods of time broadens your mind to design outside of what you usually would.

It is always so motivating after attending these functions that I started sewing a new wedding gown for my show on March 7th!

My thoughts on the Oscar Fashions

Over the years, I've seen more and more celebrities wear white to these special occasions. My thought, since I am a hopeless romantic and all is that they wear white because we as women are told that you can only really wear white on a few special occasions and they secretly want to be married and wear a wedding gown whenever they can.

I remember my very first white dress that I wore was for my first communion, then after that my debutant ball when I was 15 / 16, and then over 5 years ago I wore a natural white gown on my wedding. So, in total in my 28 years I've only wore a white gown 3 times. I think it's great that the celebrities are wearing more white, it makes the bridal gown industry boom with brides clamoring for what they saw on the red carpet.

So, to the celebrities I say wear more white gowns to these big events. It's good for the wedding economy : )

Melrose Street Fair Fashion Show

I am producing 3 shows for the Melrose Street Fair, (www.m7streetfair.com). On March 7th, from 11am to 5pm, a portion of 7th Avenue, between Indian School and Campbell will be closed and I will be showing my fashions on a center stage at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm.

I am very excited to be participating in this show, I have always considered what I do an art form and to display my latest fashions in front of the community of 8,000+ is a great honor.

I hope you will be able to make it out, I've sewn my heart out for the last month trying to get my 50's / Polka Dot inspired line made to debut at this show. I've even needed help from my wonderful assistant Tiesha Harrison with all the cutting so I can get more done. I'm juggling about 7 gowns at the moment and over the last few weeks I've stayed up and sewed anywhere from 1am - 3am to try to get more done. You will definitely not be disappointed! And there is so much to do while you are waiting for the show.

Along with the fashion shows there are many activities for families, they will have good food, indy crafts, local artisans, live music and a collector car show. From 11am - 5pm, the audience can shop the local art market where the local artisans will have booths set up.

Expanding is awesome!

Can I just say that people getting engaged over the holidays is awesome! I'm getting orders left and right locally in Arizona, but also as far as Seattle and Michigan. I may need to turn myself into a robot for the next few months and not get any sleep. Maybe lock myself in my studio for a few weeks and not come out until I am all done. Oh, but then I have a fashion show at the Melrose Street Fair on March 7th. I am producing the fashion shows at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.

I'm pretty excited about it, if I can pull an all nighter a couple times before then I can make at least 3 or 4 gowns to debut.

We will see. If you are interested in seeing if I can do it - the street far will be on 7th avenue between Indian School Road and Campbell. They will be close a portion of the street off for the fair, so if you are going somewhere other than the fair you may want to avoid getting stuck in traffic or hitting people with your car. Hehehehe.

Loving What You Do Makes a Difference!

I cannot say enough about waking up everyday and owning my own business. I love what I do! I truly understand that saying "a labor of love." Sometimes, it doesn't even seem like work. I met with one of my brides Promise and she loved the gown I made for our first fitting. Seeing her face light up when she found out her gown had pockets absolutely made my day. I tell my brides that every time I do a wedding gown for someone, it takes me back to when I got married. I think that is why people come to me as well is that I've been there and know exactly what they are feeling. And honestly, when people see that you love what you do in life and enjoy making people happy with what you have created for them, they feel like what they bought is truly something special. And of course, my clients appreciate that the gown that I made for them is an original piece of art that no else in the world has, because it was custom fitted and custom made for them.

I truly love what I do and in this economy it makes a difference! I say it's a state of mind, because I've been busier than ever with clients or perhaps it's the year for love, marriage and fresh starts. I certainly can't complain : )
